HOW TO RECOGNIZE YOU HAVE A SPIRIT OF PRIDE ~ By Christian Author Elena Ramirez

Please Note:  This is a chapter in my upcoming book:  “Behavioral Curses That Change With Christ To Blessings.”

This post is probably one of my most popular posts that gets daily attention.  I put this chapter in my book, because it is something people have a problem with.  You will note the reference here and there to the book as you read it.  If interested in ordering my book in the future stay informed, by subscribing to my blog.

Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder.  Yea, all of you by subject one to another, and be clothed with humility:  for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.  I Peter 5:5

As I am about to close this book, I sense how important this last subject is.  Pride.  I believe the Lord, wants me to write about this.  He wants you to know this truth. I believe even more so, because God hates it.  That proud look comes from pride.  But ponder on this scripture as well, because these are behaviors, that you can break, so God will not hate them in you.  Christ my friends, can take these things God hates away from you.

These six things doth the Lord hate:  seven are an abomination unto Him:  A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imagnations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. Proverbs 6:16-19

And because of who He is and what Christ has done for me, in my own behavior, I want to serve God, but I cannot if these things would be evident.  So when He wants me to, do anything, I want to obey.  I want to have an open heart, soft, and pliable, not hard, not blocking my own blessings.  When He wants me to do something, it is usually for my benefit, and others.

So when I write, to sort out His feelings on paper, I know He will speak to me and to others.  So, as I write this, I just want to acknowledge this.

I will take it to heart.  I want to please God.  I just love His presence.

We all want to be blessed by God.  We all seek an answer, from Him.  Even if it is just a small prayer, we hope for an answer.  I am only talking about Christians now.

For there, definitely is a difference between a Christian and someone who does not know truth, from Gods word.

Yet, as a Christian, we can be naive, if we do not know what the word of God says.  The reason, this only applies to Christians, is because, if you have accepted, Christ as your Lord, and savior, you have humbled yourself in the sight of God.  You have seen you are a sinner, who needs a savior.  You have sensed, and felt the love of God.

Thereby putting your “pride” aside, to call on God almighty.

A non-Christian has not.  They will not admit there is a God.  They will not admit, He rules the world.  That He created Heaven and Earth.  And yes, even Hell, where He will send those that deny him.

They will not see, that He created us in His image.  That He created us, to have a relationship with him.  They will not see, His love.  They will not give their hearts to him, to change.  This is pride.

I cannot even imagine not being able to run to God, when I am in need, or when I have a problem. Yet, there are some who deny God, but when they have a problem they might consider calling on Him but at this point, one should be aware.

To know one might not get an answer to prayer. Even, if they cry out to God.  This is why as a Christian we do not take advantage of our Salvation. We do not take advantage of grace God gives us, because if we mess up, we might not get help or an answer from God.

There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men. Job 35:12

What stopped someone from calling on God?  What is it that makes anyone choose to sin?  The devil. This is pride.

This characteristic that sometimes cannot be seen is the pride of the devil.  Remember, his agenda, was to be better than God.  If you see that in any form, or that form of pride, know that does not come from God, but from his enemy.

The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.  Psalms 10:4.

And God does hate pride.  He sees it.  He knows it, and will not bless us, when we have it.

Psalms 138:6  Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly, but the proud, he knoweth afar off.

So, we have to see there are principles there are things that can either block, or allow our blessings to come from God.  We need to know the difference.

Pride is something that is not talked about much.  Or at least, I have not heard this message.  But, I don’t want to have a spirit of pride.  So I have studied this, and tried to understand.

I know that this is a spirit that I must avoid in any shape or form.  As a behavior I have to be aware of it. I don’t want that to be a characteristic of fruit that would be displayed in my life.  I don’t want pride, because I want to please God, in fear of my Lord.

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.  Proverbs 8:13.

Yet, in many Christians lives this characteristic, is evident.  Why?  Maybe we are not always aware we have that pride?….

Or maybe, we just want to do it our own way.  And yet, have God bless us.  Hmmmm.

Did you know pride blocks love?

Well, these are some things God has brought to my heart, to share.  I hope, and because it is the last chapter of the book, and we are searching to change behaviors, that are curses, into blessings, by Christ, I pray we would all take it to heart.

I know we probably could all on agree this, but you and I want answers from God.

I want to have a right attitude before him.  He sees our hearts.  He sees everything. We cannot hide, and if we know that, it really does bring things into perspective.

He sees, how we deal with one another, and He sees, whether or not, we are making the attempt, to obey him, and to identify anything that is in our character or behavior and it is a flaw and whether or not that we do try to rectify it.  Because if we do not this will lead to the legal issue of the devil having rule over you.

Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.  I Timothy 3:6.

You want to break that behavior, so the enemy does not have a legal right to condemn you, and you need Christ. To be honest, this is something, that someone has to work on over, and over again, in a Christian’s life. Mindful of pride and mindful of the consequences of it.

Being in denial, is pride.  Letting it go, in one ear, and out the other, and not seeing it, and not making the attempt, to be mindful of it, to not change, can cause a person, to be out of control.

And if that happens, God will step in and correct you.  And that can be very harsh, in some circumstances.  I would rather see it now, to avoid, the wrath of God.  For God is a good God, but one thing, I know, the fear of the Lord, is the beginning of wisdom……

When pride is evident, the truth of the matter is that you may be put into a situation where you will become ashamed. See this scripture.

When pride cometh, then cometh shame:  but with the lowly is wisdom.  Proverbs 11:2

The following points are indicators you have pride:

1.  You have “pride” when God tells you to do something, and you do not obey.  That could be from keeping his commandments, or just a small prompting from the Holy Spirit to do something.  That is pride.

2.  You have pride, when you are rebellious.  It could be from someone, in authority.  You have a hard time submitting to authority, or even on an equal basis.  Submitting to anyone.

3. You may have pride or be dismissive, when someone shares their faith in God.  You get turned off.  You know what is right, from wrong, and you may hear the truth but there is something that just annoys you so much, that when someone expresses their faith you shut down, or you want to shut them down either way you choose to do your thing anyway.  And dismiss truth.

That is a characteristic of pride. This scripture is a strong warning to see the result, of having pride with a Christian.  God protects His people.

This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the Lord of hosts. Zephaniah 2:10

4.  You have pride, when you won’t budge, you won’t compromise to be humble, or extend grace, in a matter.  Even if you are right.  Being right or wrong is irrelevant to you. You are not flexible. You want to control the end result (like the devil) and you will not forgive yourself, to even give a little compromise in any matter or to lighten up on your stance.

You see, God extends grace to us, and He is always right.  But do we do the same for others?  Think about the example, in the Bible, when the mans debt was forgiven, but when he went out into the world, He would not forgive, he did not extend that same grace, He had been forgiven.  And He had the servant thrown into prison.  That was pride.

5.   Pride, is not admitting you are wrong.  Or even the possibility, you could be wrong.  You shut down communication.  Not open to hear, not open to listen, not open, to receive.  How sad…

6.   Pride, is looking down on others, thinking you are better than someone else.  Though, you have been forgiven, of sin.  You look at others, and judge them.  You, forget, the suffering you may have gone through, but you see yourself, as holier than thou.  You have turned the righteousness, of God, into your own “self-righteousness.”  And don’t think just because you are a Christian, that you cannot have pride. Because the enemy will target you specifically so he can enter that spirit of pride in, you.  More so if you are not aware of the devils devices.

7.  Pride is also evident, and I hear the Lord, say this, especially to me now, for I have done this.  Pride is being inferior, to someone, in a different approach.

In other words, I have sometimes let someone intimidate me or even allowed them to persecute me not recognizing my own strengths and I did this growing up, etc.  But pride can be, where you do not see you can be the best you can be.  And you see others, as superior or better than you.

Why?  It is really an unhealthy sense of lack of pride that causes one to become off balance.  And someone mean spirited and prideful, can use that to their advantage.

The wicked in His pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.  Psalms 10:2

I have learned this.  But God is not a respecter of persons.  He loves us all the same.  We are all, called to be his children.  So you cannot relinquish your confidence, to someone, and lose yourself by being in denial of who you are in Christ.

This is pride to not admit you need to boost your own confidence, in Him and by accepting yourself as someone’s stepping stone or yes, punching bag.  This is really sick pride.

Either we choose to recognize this and see He created us in his image, or we do not. Either we see His truth, and embrace it, or we do not, because pride, has blinded us.

Self-esteem should not be from our own ability or our accomplishments but from Him for He created us in his image.  He is the one that gave us the gift that we excel at, whatever it may be, that we do well at.  If you are conceited to think its all you, this is pride.

8.  Pride will be evident, when one is jealous of someone else.  Of their accomplishments, or their attributes, or even the way they look.

A person with pride they don’t reach out, they don’t try to be friendly or nice, because basically the pride won’t let them.  The jealousy stops that.  So, in some strange way, by denying even the existence, of someone, that is pride.

When we see that, we can get rid of the defensive, attitude, the guard, and be the person, Christ, is within us.

  1.   Pride is being very high minded, puffed up, overly arrogant and not reasonable to extend grace to yourself or others.

It is so important to be mindful of this, and I tried to give here, different scenarios of behavior to recognize it.   So you can see it, take it to Christ, and break the curse of it.

You need to know how it can stop you and hurt you.  It is o.k. to have confidence, but if you are off balance in anything, you will not find your best attributes, to excel at if pride is in the way.

If you are being prideful, and not seeing who you can be in Christ, you can miss out on doing great things for God, and others.

Don’t let that pride stop the blessings of God in your life, or being the best you can be, meeting your potential.

God just put this on my heart, and this goes hand in hand.  But we can recognize how great God is, and how he teaches us his ways….

We cannot help and love him and give him glory and honor him.  I say this from my heart, because I know the difference.

His goal:

Is for us to be the best we can be.  Through Him through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  Christ had no pride, as He gave of himself, suffered, and went to the cross.

Our goal:

Is to obey, with a good heart, and attitude, not out of a begrudging thought.  Making it a burden.  Realizing with humbleness, how precious our salvation is, and pride blocks our relationship with Him.

Why do we want to get rid of pride? Because He is so good, He is so merciful.  He is so wonderful.  He is God.  And what Christ did on the cross, for us, takes the penalty of sin away.  It takes death away, for we have a pardon.  We have been spared. So why would anyone not want to give their heart to Christ, to take that pride away.

In conclusion, when we stop and change and see that behavior.  The curse is broken. When we take it to Christ, and repent. When we start by learning how to be humble.  Remember. The Lord lifts the humble, but turns from the proud.

Being humble, is just really trying to be nice.  To be giving, of your heart, to be courteous, and to extend, graciousness, will remove pride. You cannot have pride, if you are purposely being aware to be humble.  It will go away this spirit of pride. Because the spirit of Christ, the Holy spirit will remove it.

This scripture, reminds us what we should do with our friends, or to make the attempt to be friendly.

Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself and make sure thy friend.  Proverbs 6:3

Again and I reiterate, being humble is not being a pushover or a stepping stone.  You have to find that sweet balance away from pride and being humble, and mix love with it, in a surrendering form of love, to God.

Love will be evident.  For God is love…..

Love, covers a multitude of sins, and when we see the characteristic, of pride.  We can change it, by prayer, by departing from that, and by knowing what Gods word says about pride.  He says a lot….So you and I need to know.

And as I conclude this be forewarned concerning pride.  For if someone knew in advance they would be warned. But when troubles happen, and one knew about having pride, and continued with this spirit, this bad behavior, this is the consequence.

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18.

You have a homework assignment.  So do I.  God wants you to look up scriptures on pride, and being proud.  Will you do it?  Or will you let that pride in again?  I am going to look them up even today………….

Blessings, and Just my thoughts,  Elena Ramirez

And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the Lord : I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them. Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the Lord hath spoken. Give glory to the Lord your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness. But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the Lord’s flock is carried away captive. (Jeremiah 13:14-17 KJV)

My Prayer of Hope,

Father, today, I will search my heart, and your word, concerning pride, and being proud.  I hereby, give myself to you, to correct.  Oh Lord, I don’t want to miss anything in this, and I want to study myself, because truly being corrected by you, means, I am missing it.  I do not want to miss this.  But, if I am doing something wrong, in any area of my life, I give you permission to show me, where, and how.  So I can change.  I don’t want pride to stop the flow of my blessings.  I know you lift the humble, and turn from the proud.  So, I want to be humble in your sight.  Lord, help me, help us, the body of Christ, to see this.  And to turn from it.  When we act like this, we act like those who do not know you.  I do not want that to be a part of who I am.  In Jesus name, humbly I ask.  Amen

  1. Proof that Jesus is coming soon!

2 Ti. 3:1-5 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

  2. Thank you…God’s Word is timeless yet right on time. I asked the Lord to show me..me and I heard pride and here before Yom Kippur, I “find” your blog. Continue to be used by and for the Lord. God is good and I will continue to pray this prayer and meditate on those Scriptures. I want God to be pleased with me and my life and work not be in vain.

  3. Elena, I was touched by your comment on Mitt Romney’s wall.

Elena Ramirez Talking about defending our country….My favorite moment, was the closing comments, that Romney made. He was bold, articulate, and very clear and concise. But what touched my heart, was his mentioning of the military. His commitment, to be there for them, to help them, to recognize, their contribution, to this great country. Not once did Mr. Obama, give any mention of them or for them. Mr. Romney’s considerations to say that, said volumes, to all of us. For those, who have served, serving, or had family members serving. We cannot forget our military, and we must, honor them, for keeping America free. This man, Mr. Romney, carries himself, with nobility, and integrity. America needs him, and I pray, we pray for him, and vote for him, to get us back on track. To be the country, we should be.

    • Thank you Valerie. I highly esteem, Mr. Romney, and I believe, he would greatly help this country. I believe, history, will show, and express, he is a true patriot, and a man of valor, and integrity. Beloved, of the United States, and the world, and for good reasons. Have a great day….

    • Hello Liz,

When I wrote #6, I should have explained, that when one has been inferior, one can lose their balance. And when you recognize who you are in Christ, you can go from one extreme to another. So balance is needed, so one does not get prideful. When your inferior, and trying to work everything out, you can all of a sudden, think your better, because you have repented, you have received your salvation etc. So, when I related it to myself, it was after a process, that God had to remind me, even though I was now more humble, I still had issues. I still had pride, I had to deal with. You see, God is not a respecter of persons. And we have to find that balance, where we are confident, yet, not inferior. I hope that makes more sense.

      Blessings….Elena
